Working as a development worker

Are you interested in working abroad and combining your skills with socially relevant work? What you need most of all is a firm commitment to and a passion for working together with others in a spirit of partnership. The following is also important:

  • Professional qualification (a university degree is usually required)
  • At least two years’ professional experience in which you were able to apply your specialist knowledge
  • Experience working abroad, especially outside Europe, is an advantage
  • In most cases, we can only recruit EU or Swiss citizens
  • Interest in other cultures
  • Very good written and spoken language skills relevant to the host country
  • Identification with the aims and values of church development cooperation 

Here is where your expertise is required

You should have a high level of expertise in one or more of these areas:

  • Organisational development or management in not-for-profit projects or organisations
  • Adult education
  • Rural or urban development
  • Peace and conflict work
  • PR work
  • Emergency and reconstruction aid
  • Medicine

Working for the Civil Peace Service

As a development worker in the Civil Peace Service, you will be working in conflict regions. Accordingly, your core skills and qualities should include empathy and resilience, a high degree of social responsibility and excellent communication skills. You should also have:

  • A university degree
  • Professional expertise in an area that is relevant for peace work
  • At least two years’ professional experience
  • Expertise in adult education
  • Experience in organisational development or in managing social organisations
  • Expertise in networking
  • Expertise in communication and PR work
  • Skills in planning, monitoring and evaluating projects (PME)
